Hochschwab is one of the most beautiful mountain areas in Austria and still feels quiet. We did a two day hike here in early October 2021 and it was perfect for slow travel. The landscape is open, rocky, and wide, with long views in every direction.

For travelers from the Czech Republic it is quite close by car, so it makes a great long weekend trip without a long drive. You can follow the main trail or add detours to small peaks and viewpoints along the way.

Where to sleep

The most comfortable option is to sleep on the Schiestlhaus mountain hut. It is friendly, warm, and gives you an easy start for the next morning. You can book a bed here: Schiestlhaus.

If you want more freedom, you can also bivouac in the mountains. Just pack for cold nights, even in October.

Day 1: Up to the hut

The first day is a steady uphill walk through forest and open slopes. In October the colors are strong and the air is clear. We reached the hut in the afternoon and watched the light change on the plateau.

Day 2: Plateau and views

From the hut you can walk to nearby peaks and crosses, or take a longer loop across the plateau. There are many small detours and photo spots, so you can adjust the day to your energy and the weather.

Nature and wildlife

We saw alpine ibexes and many mountain ash trees with red berries. The area feels wild but not extreme. It is beautiful and calm, but be ready for freezing nights in October.
